OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Mission:
To protect, promote, and advance fundamental human rights and freedoms across the Southern Africa region through collaborative advocacy, strategic litigation, capacity building, and public education. We strive to foster a regional culture of accountability and respect for international human rights law, ensuring that all people in the region can live with dignity, equality, and justice.

Core components of the SAHRL mission
1. Beneficiaries
Our mission serves all people living within the Southern Africa region, with particular attention to vulnerable and marginalized groups who are disproportionately affected by human rights violations. These groups include, but are not limited to:
  • Refugees, asylum seekers, and internally displaced persons.
  • Indigenous communities.
  • Women, children, and LGBTQ+ individuals.
  • Persons with disabilities.
  • Human rights defenders and journalists.
2. Purpose
We exist to close the gap between human rights standards and the lived realities of people in our region. Our purpose is to:
  • Challenge systemic discrimination and injustice.
  • Provide a platform for those whose voices are silenced.
  • Strengthen the rule of law by compelling governments and non-state actors to respect their human rights obligations.
  • Ensure that democratic principles and fundamental freedoms are upheld as the foundation for a just and stable society.
3. Methodology
To achieve our mission, we employ a multi-faceted and collaborative approach.
  • Collaborative Advocacy: Working with civil society organizations, grassroots movements, and international partners to present a united front against human rights abuses.
  • Strategic Litigation: Pursuing legal avenues to challenge state-sanctioned violations and secure redress for victims, including submitting communications to regional human rights bodies.
  • Research and Reporting: Conducting rigorous, evidence-based research and publishing reports to expose violations, identify patterns of abuse, and inform policy dialogue.
  • Capacity Building: Providing human rights defenders, lawyers, and community leaders with the knowledge, resources, and skills they need to effectively promote and defend rights in their own communities.
  • Public Education: Launching awareness campaigns and media initiatives to inform the public about their rights, empower citizens to demand accountability, and build public support for human rights norms.
4. Guiding principles
Our work is grounded in the following core values:
  • Independence and Integrity: We maintain complete political and financial independence to ensure the objectivity and credibility of our work.
  • Inclusion and Non-Discrimination: We are dedicated to the principle that human rights are universal, inalienable, and indivisible, and we actively work to fight all forms of discrimination.
  • Participation and Accountability: We believe in empowering rights-holders to participate meaningfully in the processes that affect them. We hold ourselves to the highest standards of transparency and accountability to our partners and the public.
  • Innovation and Adaptability: We are committed to creatively and flexibly responding to emerging human rights challenges, leveraging new technologies and approaches to maximize our impact.
